Civil rights icon Dorothy Height died this morning at Howard University Hospital. No reports on the cause of her death have been released. She was 98.
The passionate activist was on the podium when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his “I Have a Dream,” speech at the March on Washington in 1963. Height was the president of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in 1957 until 1997. She still remained chairman of the organization.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Height earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from New York University and did post-graduate work at Columbia University and New York School of Social Work. In 1994, President Bill Clinton presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom award. This morning, President Barack Obama released a statement, in which he called Height “the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to so many Americans.”

“Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dorothy Height–the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to so many Americans. Ever since she was denied entrance to college because the incoming class had already met its quota of two African American women, Dr. Height devoted her life to those struggling for equality. She led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years, and served as the only woman at the highest level of the Civil Rights Movement–witnessing every march and milestone along the way. And even in the final weeks of her life–a time when anyone else would have enjoyed their well-earned rest–Dr. Height continued her fight to make our nation a more open and inclusive place for people of every race, gender, background and faith.
“Michelle and I offer our condolences to all those who knew and loved Dr. Height–and all those whose lives she touched.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, a federal judge has dismissed the wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Notorious B.I.G.‘s family against the city of Los Angeles.
The lawsuit was dismissed, “without prejudice,” by U.S. district Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen after lawyers in the case agreed that the suit could be filed again without being subject to statues of limitations. The attorney for the deceased rapper’s family maintained that the criminal investigation was “gathering speed and steam,” hence a hold would be put on the civil suit as not to conflict with the ongoing criminal investigation.
Born Christopher Wallace, the Notorious B.I.G. was shot and killed on March 9, 1997 during a trip to Los Angeles. In 2002, his family, including his mother, Voletta, sued the city. The case was tried in 2005, but ended in a mistrial.

RihRih kicked off the European leg of her “Last Girl On Earth” tour this past weekend, but Monday’s show was followed by an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Pop the hood for details.
Rihanna was rushed to hospital after performing in Switzerland on Monday night. The ‘Umbrella’ singer played a sold-out concert in Zurich but after leaving the Hallenstadion venue just after midnight she was taken to the Hirslanden private clinic via a blacked-out Mercedes.
The 22-year-old pop star was then quickly escorted into the accident and emergency department by her driver, bodyguard and assistant to be treated for a mystery ailment.
Alenka Ambroz, head of the clinic’s corporate communications, told Blick: “Rihanna arrived at the accident and emergency unit. We’re not going to give any details.”
She left the hospital at around 2.55am, over two and a half hours after being admitted, and was taken back to the venue.
It seems Rihanna’s mysterious medical problem hasn’t had any long-lasting effects though as she was able to take to the stage in Lyon, France, last night.
Hmmm wonder what could’ve been ailing Rih Rih???
